The Motion of Light

Late afternoon light gleams down canyon, on autumn aspens, willows, and Chalk Creek, as it flows down out of the Collegiate Peaks. Rich color and brushstrokes express the life and energy of the river, the sound of the wind and the rush of the flowing water.

Chalk Creek is in the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness here in Colorado - we have lots of mountains to choose from here!  The Collegiates are some of my favorites, and I visit them often - partly because they have a large number of snowy mountain peaks, but also because it's close enough to Colorado Springs, my home, to visit for a day trip - just about 2 and a half hours away, including a stop in Hartsel, Colorado, for a latte.  I'm spoiled - gotta have my latte when I go out plein air painting!

I often visit in the summer and fall, and I never tire of the beautiful landscape along Chalk Creek.  It's provided inspiration for many a painting, and we have camped and hiked in the area over many years.

The title inspiration, "The Motion of Light" refers to how the light travels down the valley, backlighting the beautiful autumn aspens and illuminating the rushing water of the flowing creek.

Original acrylic on canvas, the painting continues around the sides for a beautiful finish, ready to hang without framing.
